July - September 2008
WHERE’S SUMMER?
That’s a question many of us have been asking. I can’t believe it is July. Where has the time gone? As for summer, I have been loving this cooler weather and am glad spring has stayed around for as long as it has. For those who know me, I am not a summer person. I don’t know why exactly. I can only narrow it down to the three things I dislike (hate is a strong word) about summer: humidity, bugs and shaving my legs! So come on winter! Besides, admit it, winter is great for quilting. But, I have been known to be flexible (don’t ask for verification on this from my staff), so I will welcome this summer with an open mind. I am sure that July and August will not disappoint us (as far as summer heat goes). I have to admit that the tomatoes I planted need the heat, not to mention all the corn and soybeans my husband and all the other farmers have planted. And heat brings sweet corn too, so it can’t be all bad! Let’s just agree not to bring up that bathing suit topic, OK?
So as long as it will be hot, check out some “hot” things to do to help you beat the heat and keep quilting. We have some fun stuff coming up, as always. Don’t miss out on the I-80 Shop Hop the end of July. Four fabulous fun-filled quilt hopping & shopping days. Now that’s a summer refreshment! July also brings thoughts of Christmas for quilters since that’s typically when the holiday fabrics make their debut to give you plenty of time to get those projects made. Most of ours are on the shelves now! Of course, we will be having a Christmas in July special. (And don’t forget you-know-who’s birthday in July!)
Classes this time were scheduled with you in mind. We know how busy the summers are with vacations, gardening, weddings, etc. so we’ve put together some fun one-day projects:
check out Redwork by Machine, go “Green” and make your own reversible tote – a FREE class, the super versatile Holiday Card holder, a special table runner celebrating the 16th of Aug. (no special reason – we just want to!), learn to make new fabric from old using color discharge (think outside the box!), traditional English paper-piecing by hand is back as well as Hand Quilting 101, a nice compliment to English paper-piecing, not to mention another one-day marathon machine quilting class and a brand new advanced machine quilting class to take you to the next level. WOW! You’ll want to get in on these great one day-ers!
Got a wee bit more time? Check out a new quilt-as-you-go technique I saw at Spring Market – Fun and Done – the name says it all. Tell all your quilting wannabe friends that we’ll be doing a day time Beginners class this go-around with Bonnie Clark. Keep reading the newsletter for details on everything mentioned!
I hope to see you all soon!
Life is good – enjoy every minute of it!
Eileen Bowen, Owner
(P.S. – I apologize that the newsletter is a tad late this quarter, but if you have been in, you know we’ve had “issues”, but I won’t bore you with the details (like computer stuff!). Don’t worry – you haven’t missed out!)

CHRISTMAS IN JULY SPECIAL!!
The fabric is here! The early bird gets the deal on Christmas & Holiday fabrics while supplies last (and you all know once certain bolts are gone, they’re gone – sadly enough), so take advantage of Special Savings on these bolts during the entire month of July - $1.00 off per yard! Yes, yes it’s true, but…..(there’s always a but) one yard cuts only! In other words, you have to buy one yard cuts to get the $1.00 off – (no deals on partial cuts, no 50 cents off a half-yard or 25 cents off a quarter yard – you get the idea. It would drive us all mad at the register anyway!). Besides, who can’t use a yard of scrumptious, delicious, hilarious, bright, fun fabrics! Hey, you never know, I may sweeten the pot occasionally during the month (you know how moody I get) so be sure to check for any Familygram announcements or ask when you stop in!
IT’S YOU-KNOW-WHO’S BIRTHDAY!
(If you don’t know, it’s mine! You know – Eileen – the owner)
Well, I am definitely getting too old to give you a discount based on my age! So, since I was born on the 22nd of July, I came up with something clever and fun. Stop in on Tuesday, July 22 and I will give you a special “birthday” bag. You will receive a 22% discount on any regularly priced item you can fit in the bag! It has to be in the bag, not taped to it or glued to it, etc. – I know your wily ways! Oh yeah – only 1 bag per customer! (You could bring a hubby or a non-quilting friend, though.) I’m not picky about gifts, either Ha! Ha!
(P.S. – Check out the Class Description for the Sweet Sixteen Wavy Log Cabin Table Runner for another day of savings! – See how I get you to read about the classes?)
VERY NEW & OH SO CHIC – Quilter’s Dream Green
Have you heard the word about this new batting? It’s an earth-friendly, soft cozy batting made 100% from recycled plastic bottles. I wouldn’t lie – it is nice! I have 1 of each size in stock right now so stop in and read the facts and feel the batt! See how many bottles are rescued with each size. (AND – it’s wrinkle-resistant!). Place your order today!
Did you know we also now carry Quilters Dream-Poly in black? And we now have 18” wide batting perfect for table runners! Only $2 per yard!
FABRICS – ooh-la-la!
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some very nice new fabrics. In the Pink II is here! If you loved the first collection, you will love these – all 21 bolts! Did you know we have the “official” Boy Scouts of America fabrics from Robert Kaufman? Cool projects coming soon! Look for a neat water bottle carrier – perfect for scout outings! (I’m just waiting on the pattern.) Check out the Bailey Collection also from Robert Kaufman – very sweet, soft & demure in delicate browns, blues & greens. I’m not going to list all the Christmas & Holiday fabrics – you’ll have to stop in and see for yourself! (Lots of Moda!) Coming very soon (I hope – always at the mercy of the manufacturer, you know) – the next Wizard of Oz series featuring the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and the Emerald City! Califon by Mark Lipinsky, editor of Quilter’s Home magazine, new Woolies flannels from Maywood Studios, some wine-featured fabrics from Robert Kaufman and Spellbound, a fun, hilarious Halloween line featuring green monsters and laboratory paraphernalia! There’s bound to be some must-haves!
P.S. The new 2008 – 2010 Quilter’s Travel Companion book is here!

All classes requiring a sewing machine are based on the assumption that you can properly operate your sewing machine and can wind a bobbin, thread the needle, adjust the tension and be able to sew a straight stitch.
Your machine should be in proper working order prior to class. This means proper tension and ability to sew a good straight stitch or other stitch required for class. If your sewing machine has not been cleaned within the last year it is recommended to have it professionally cleaned and tensions checked. It would be helpful to bring your machine maintenance manual with you to class should you run into difficulty.
Class times do not include time for instruction on operation of your machine and would prohibit the other students from completing their projects within the allotted time frame.
